Barnsley Museums shortlisted for volunteer team of the year

Barnsley Museums are delighted to announce that one of its volunteer groups have been shortlisted for the Museums + Heritage Award, in the category ‘Volunteer Team of Year’.

The award highlights the outstanding contribution volunteers make to the sector by giving up their time in support of arts and culture.  It is also an opportunity to show appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Nominated are a team of young people from across Barnsley with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) who are giving up their time at Worsbrough Mill Country Park to improve the outside spaces.

The group who have been supported by Opening Doors and Qdos Creates, were nominated in recognition of their fantastic efforts, which include making wildlife habitats and birdboxes, protecting the environment in the park, creating artistic interpretation for the site and fundraising over £100 in donations. The work of the volunteers has made an incredible impact on the area and they are keen to return for further projects once it is safe to do so.

Winners of the award will be announced at an online ceremony on Tuesday, 22 September.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “We are extremely grateful to the dedicated team of volunteers at Barnsley Museums who are committed to helping us improve our five free sites in many ways.  The team at Worsbrough have done amazing things to support the visitor attraction and we are delighted that they will be working alongside us in the future.  They are truly deserving of the nomination which recognises the importance of the contributions they make.”

Nicole Guy, QDOS Creates said: “Working with the Young Volunteers at Worsbrough Mill was a rewarding experience and it’s wonderful to see the valuable work they have done has been recognised. It’s been a privilege and an honour to work in partnership with Barnsley Museums and Opening Doors on this wonderful project and we are very excited to be shortlisted for the Museum +Heritage Awards. Well done to everyone involved, what an incredible achievement!”
