Worsbrough Mill and Country Park reservoir improvement work is well underway
Essential improvement works are taking place to the reservoir in Worsbrough Mill Country Park which includes repairs to the north and south banks of the reservoir, focusing on preserving the area for decades to come.
The work that is taking place throughout 2023 and is due to be completed by Spring 2024 is well underway with many improvements already made.
A new wooden ramp leading up to the Mill Pond has been installed which will greatly improve access to the area, making the Country Park much easier to explore.
Aeration devices have been installed to protect the many species of fish that live in the reservoir and will support their health.
New species nested in the Country Park for the first time in its history with two pairs of Little Ringed Plovers making the nature reserve their home for the summer. They have now moved on to warmer climates.
The northwest bank has been replaced, works to Kip’s wall are well underway, and demolition of the south wall is almost complete.
An update event is taking place in the Country Park on Thursday, 31 August between 11am and 3pm to discuss the work being carried out and the next stages of the project. All are welcome to this free drop-in event.
The Country Park is an important natural habitat to many species which is why they are working with local people, volunteers, wildlife specialists, and partners, including the Barnsley and District Amalgamated Angling Society, Wigfield Farm, the Environment Agency, Natural England and contractors Balfour Beatty, throughout the project to make sure the work is carried out with the least amount of disruption possible and that the local wildlife is protected.
The Mill and Country Park remains open for visitors who can come and experience its beauty including free trails, stunning public art, a play area, volunteering opportunities, wide-ranging events, a gift shop, a visitor centre, and an on-site café all of which offer a unique day out for all ages. Once the works are completed, the 17th century flour mill will be back in operation for visitors to enjoy.

The project brings many benefits to the attraction including accessible ramps, improved pathways, and the re-seeding of areas. Cllr John Clarke JP, Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillor for Worsbrough, said: “Costing in the region of 2 million pounds, (£100,000 of which is being funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral City Region) this is obviously a major project, and as such involves considerable effort, we have attempted to expedite all aspects of the work as quickly as possible to make the area as safe as possible and to accommodate the many people who use the Reservoir and Country Park.”
